The First Necessity, pp. 171-172

Opening Remarks
The first requirement for this inevitable transformation is the ascension of consciousness from its mind bound state to the higher spiritual realms. It means the emergence of an intuitive mind and heart in place of the labouring reason and the vital-animal emotions.

The spirit’s ascent
But first the spirit’s ascent we must achieve
Out of the chasm from which our nature rose.

The mind under the spell of the Inconscience has created a gulf between God and world. This must be bridged by an ascension to a greater reconciling Truth.

The soul must soar
The soul must soar sovereign above the form
And climb to summits beyond mind’s half-sleep;
Our hearts we must inform with heavenly strength,
Surprise the animal with the occult god.

Rising beyond its slavery to the form, the soul must climb to the summits beyond our present mind. Our hearts too must be filled with a greater strength akin to the gods and thereby master the animal in us and turn its passions into a heavenly impulsion to do God’s work upon earth.

The gold tongue of sacrifice
Then kindling the gold tongue of sacrifice,
Calling the powers of a bright hemisphere,
We shall shed the discredit of our mortal state,
Make the abysm a road for Heaven’s descent,
Acquaint our depths with the supernal Ray
And cleave the darkness with the mystic Fire.

This ascension can only be achieved by the way of the Vedic Seers who igniting the fire of aspiration within them sacrificed the lower nature into this fire for purification and calling in the powers of greater worlds to take hold of the human vessel. This descending Light will then make our nature a bridge to enter the dark abysses and slay the darkness with this fire rising higher and brighter by the sacrifice.

Closing Remarks
Sri Aurobindo is not only prophesying the future but also showing us the path through which our present struggling life will be transformed into the Life Divine.

It is the fact that people who are grateful and cheerful and ready to go step by step,... do actually march faster and more surely than those who are impatient and in haste and at each step despair.
