At the Feet of The Mother

The Merger of Love, p. 410

Opening Remarks
Savitri and Satyavan come closer and take each other in embrace of a never-ending love.

Her beating heart
As if inclined before some gracious god
Who has out of his mist of greatness shone
To fill with beauty his adorer’s hours,
She bowed and touched his feet with worshipping hands;
She made her life his world for him to tread
And made her body the room of his delight,
Her beating heart a remembrancer of bliss.

Savitri inclined towards Satyavan as if towards a gracious god and bowed and touched his feet with worshipping hands. He seemed to have emerged out of some realm of greatness to fill his adorer with beauty. She gave herself and her life for him to tread and made her body the room for his joy, her heart beating for him a constant reminder of bliss.

He gathered all Savitri
He bent to her and took into his own
Their married yearning joined like folded hopes;
As if a whole rich world suddenly possessed,
Wedded to all he had been, became himself,
An inexhaustible joy made his alone,
He gathered all Savitri into his clasp.

Satyavan bent and took Savitri in his arms. Their yearnings and hopes were married together as if a whole new rich world was theirs. Wedded to all of himself and receiving an inexhaustible joy from Savitri, he gathered all of her in his clasp.

One brevity intense
Around her his embrace became the sign
Of a locked closeness through slow intimate years,
A first sweet summary of delight to come,
One brevity intense of all long life.

His embrace became the sign of a locked closeness through intimate years to follow. It was as if a first sweet summary of the delight to come revealed itself in one brief intense moment that was to become their entire life.

A river pouring into a sea
In a wide moment of two souls that meet
She felt her being flow into him as in waves
A river pours into a mighty sea.

In a wide moment of the meeting of two souls, she felt his being flow into her as in waves even as a river pours into a mighty sea.

The merger complete
As when a soul is merging into God
To live in Him for ever and know His joy,
Her consciousness grew aware of him alone
And all her separate self was lost in his.

The experience of their mutual union was as if a soul is merging forever into God to live for Him and know His joy. Her consciousness became aware of him alone and all her separate self was lost in his.

Circle of bliss
As a starry heaven encircles happy earth,
He shut her into himself in a circle of bliss
And shut the world into himself and her.

As the star-studded sky encircles happy earth, he shut herself in a circle of bliss and shut the world in their embrace.

Boundless isolation
A boundless isolation made them one;
He was aware of her enveloping him
And let her penetrate his very soul
As is a world by the world’s spirit filled,
As the mortal wakes into Eternity,
As the finite opens to the Infinite.

They were together alone, boundlessly. He was aware of her enveloping him and let her penetrate his very soul. It was as if the world is filled with its spirit, or the mortal waking up to eternity, or the finite opens to the Infinite.

Closing Remarks
It is a most beautiful and complete and truest description of the married union born of the fire of deep intense love.

There is nothing sentimental in the true weeping that comes from the soul. All that you feel now is the blossoming of the psychic being in you and the growth of a real bhakti.
